Since its opening last year, Arawak Interiors has stocked an inventory abounding in recycled products. Most of the furniture in the showroom is hand-crafted in Indonesia from reclaimed teak—some from demolished buildings and furnishings, others from defunct Balinese fishing boats.
In addition to furniture, Arawak carries accessories and accent pieces made from recycled materials or products that encourage reuse.
A line of reversible indoor/outdoor rugs are constructed from 98% recycled post-consumer plastic (bottles, packing material, milk jugs). Brightly coloured, reusable shopping bags roll up into a tiny ball and fit almost anywhere so that shoppers who desire not to use plastic bags have them handily available. A line of kitchen and dining products by bambu boasts its achievement of being the “only bamboo products made from Certified Organic bamboo sources.”
The fact that these products are “green” needs to be mentioned because shoppers wouldn’t otherwise know—the furniture, rugs and accessories come in both classic styles and in modern and funky designs perfect for Caribbean interiors.
Arawak's socially and environmentally conscious products include products made from retired fishing boats (mirror, table, bowls, vase), bamboo utensils and cutting boards, greeting cards printed with soy ink on recycled paper, furniture made from reclaimed teak (plantstand), reusable tote bags and water canisters, spouts to turn plastic 2-litre bottles into watering cans, and all-weather rugs made from post-consumer plastic.
