Toad Hall Estate’s founder purchased the desolate property in 1968, after serving time in Asia with the US Army. He constructed the main buildings over several months between the summer and winter Solstices in 1970.
The balance was designed to allow guests their privacy inside personal pavilions, with the option of congregating together outside in the shared spaces, just steps away from their bedroom doors. The kitchen and living areas are open plan, sheltered by sloping wooden covers inspired by traditional Japanese architecture.
