Snuggle up with a book at Nook

In late 2020, Kate Henderson opened locally owned and operated Nook book shop, which culminates Kate’s passions for the BVI community, retail business, and her love of reading and books.

There is a wonderful array of books and gifts available for all ages and from many corners of the world. Nook features the latest bestsellers and classics including fiction and memoirs for both adults and children, as well as the very best in cookbooks, coffee table books, business, lifestyle, and arts and craft books.

One of Nook’s goals is to promote and encourage readers of all ages in the community through fun reading events of favourite children’s books, plays developed from book characters, workshops for development of young writers and also book clubs.

A valued secondhand book section provides the opportunity for previously loved titles, available for purchase for just a few dollars each. Utilising pre-loved personal libraries that are no longer needed to provide an inexpensive source of books for readers on a budget. All revenue from these pre-loved books is reinvested in charitable activities that promote reading in the community.

To top off this wonderful new destination, you can enjoy a cup of your favourite coffee and tasty treat from the Island Roots cafe, right there in-store.

Nook is not just a shop, but a fun destination that the whole family can enjoy. Situated next door to Nutmeg & Co., Waterfront Drive (opposite the Road Town ferry terminal). Reach out via phone and WhatsApp: +1 284 340 3164 or [email protected].

Go AWOL!

AWOL (“Art WithOut Limits”) is the philanthropic arm of Debi Carson. AWOL brings BVI youth and community together to engage in independent, creative works and collaborative projects such as the ReCreate Art Competition and Project LOVE this last December, as well as painted murals like those at Romney Park in West End, Ebenezer Thomas Primary School and Bregado Flax School on Virgin Gorda.

You can also see recently created works proudly displayed at Island Roots at Nook book shop.

Art knows no age, gender, race, creed or culture. It brings people and communities together and is a tool for expression and healing.  AWOL uses art as the catalyst to collaborate, create and community.

Anyone can join AWOL and be a part of creative community projects or you can pick up these wonderful art kits and create at home.

AWOL art kits are hand-assembled and contain a variety of items to create 5+ art/craft projects. Follow the included inspiration or go AWOL and let your imagination run wild. Just $25 and for each kit purchased one is donated to charity. Over 75 kits donated so far!

A poet in our midst

Epiphaneia – by Richard Georges

WINNER of the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature 2020

‘They say birds always find their way back home but home is a nowhere — a memory; a never was.’

Set in the immediate aftermath of 2017’s Hurricane Irma, the most catastrophic storm to strike the British Virgin Islands, Richard Georges’ Epiphaneia is a collection of rich, transcendental verse. Beyond the loss and devastation that such a natural disaster brings, Georges’s ideas span beyond the physical world, asking us to consider the ways in which families and communities come together amidst such tragedy.

Blood runs under the earth. A father will instruct his daughter to the hills where their ancestors are buried. A flying man opens a door in the sky. Children play in the twisted roots of a landscape both dangerous and triumphant. Constantly attuned to the devastating power of nature and where the body, too, is ‘a precarious house’, these poems are hymns to the resilience of the human spirit. Georges locates in the negative space of aftermath both the ghosts of history and the mythic beginnings of a yet unlived, rejuvenated world.

Signed copies of Epiphaneia retail for $20. Available alongside other titles by Richard Georges at Cedar Cafe, Mellow Moods, and Nook book shop.
