With A Little Help From Local Artists – Whether you are a permanent resident in the BVI or just visiting, locally created art can give your house a unique look, along with a great story to tell your guests!  There are so many options and media from which to choose that will help you express your style and complement any décor.

A great showcase for local artists is The Gallery on Main Street, owned by Lisa Gray, a well known respected artist living in the BVI.  Lisa’s prints are very distinctive and internationally recognizable.  My sister recently saw the famous “Turtle” while sitting in a friend’s house in Australia!  Lisa’s gallery also supports other fantastic BVI artists such as Savannah Redmond, Aileen Malcolm, Jinx Morgan, Bruce Smith, Lutia Durante.

Depending on your style, you may choose between the more traditional medium of oils and pastels, or something more modern like black and white or colour photography.  The importance of the correct mat and frame for your picture is often underrated.  A bad choice can take away from the picture but on the other hand, using creative and unusual moldings can add aesthetically to your room scheme.

You may decide to take the more traditional route and decorate with local charts and maps.  There are lots of options; both new and aged can look stunning on their own or as a collection.  At House we exclusively sell marble coasters printed with an antique map of the BVI.  India Hicks, a world renowned designer, puts nautical charts and maps to practical use in her book Island Style.

Photography can be another great source of art.  Local photographer Amanda Petrovic owns the Allamanda Gallery opposite The Bakery in Road Town and has many fabulous prints of scenery, flowers, birds or buildings that would enchance any decorating scheme to perfection.

David Thrasher, based in Apple Bay, uses bright colours to portray the fascinating subjects in his oil paintings.  David can also be commissioned to produce a unique piece especially for you.

Decorating your house with pieces of art does not have to be confined to framed pictures.  Aragon Dick-Read showcases his amazing sculptures at Trellis Bay.  The beautiful copper tones and verdigris of his work complements this climate perfectly.

At House, we sell driftwood mirrors and frames by local artist SHE, which are always popular with our customers.

SHE can also be commissioned to create a piece to suit your individual needs.

We are very lucky that we have numerous exceptional artists of many different styles here in the BVI.  The options are literally endless to create a distinctive look for your house or a souvenir to serve as a happy reminder of your BVI vacation.
