REVISED HURRICANE PREDICTIONS ARE IN
Friday 10th August 2007 –Scientists from Colorado State University have decreased their seasonal hurricane forecast.  On 3rd August 2007, according to an information release issued by the University the team of forecasters led by Philip J. Klotzbach maintained their prediction of a very active Atlantic basin hurricane season despite their slightly lower numbers.  “We now estimate 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 intense hurricanes,” stated Klotzbach.

The forecast was lowered due to slightly less favourable conditions in the tropical Atlantic.  Sea surface temperature anomalies have cooled across the tropical Atlantic in recent weeks and there have been several significant dust outbreaks from Africa, signifying a generally stable air mass over the tropical Atlantic.

Despite the lowered predictions, the BVI community is still urged not to become complacent. There is still an above-average chance that a major hurricane will impact the Caribbean this year. Therefore, it is imperative that the people of the BVI keep hurricane preparedness in the forefront.  Ensure that each household has made the necessary preparations to combat the expected fury of the 2007 hurricane season.  Hurricane preparedness material can be obtained from the Department of Disaster Management.
