Great Camanoe

The thing that sets the BVI apart from most of the Caribbean is the spectacular ocean vistas created by the proximity of its islands along Drake’s Channel.  Privateer’s Bay on the island of Great Camanoe, slightly to the east of Tortola, is just about the best spot to take full advantage of these stunning ocean and island views.

There is something romantically detached about the brand of island life enjoyed by the 28 or so homeowners fortunate enough to call the estate of Privateer’s Bay home; unashamedly less manicured than some newer developments, this one, according to its homeowners, has soul.

Serendipity, a five-bedroom villa with bags of character, is a fabulous retreat for lovers of the sea.  Sitting on a lot of approximately 2.3 acres a few hundred yards from the communal, this lovely island home provides simply spectacular views out over Marina Cay on to Virgin Gorda and beyond.

The first of two buildings is the original house, which consists of two bedrooms plus a third bedroom with studio, two bathrooms, both with outdoor showers, and a spacious lounge and kitchen, all combined to provide a wonderful sense of proportion and scale.  The second building was built approximately 10 years ago and provides a further two bedrooms, two bathrooms, lounge and kitchenette.  The picture window in the lounge provides an awe-inspiring, framed view of Marina Cay and beyond.  The Master Suite with private bathroom and dressing area leads on to a delightful private terrace.  The ensuite bathroom for the second bedroom is wonderfully playful with a “Flukes Fish Mural” decorating the walls and a terrific outdoor shower.  Vernacular cooling is in full effect throughout the house (see article page 26).

There can be, boasts the owner, no better spot in the Caribbean for taking a dip in a jacuzzi than the one situated on the local stone terrace of Serendipity!  It’s all set amongst tastefully and sensibly designed tropical gardens, which benefit greatly from a large number of indigenous plants that require minimal maintenance.

On the more practical side, the home has plenty of storage space, a laundry room with a brand new washing machine, a new solar hot water heater, a Jeep Cherokee and a 17’ Boston Whaler with a 90’hp in good condition to get you to and from the island.  A small yard is provided for homeowners to haul their boats for storage whilst off island.  Nearby Trellis Bay has a small grocery store for those small emergencies whilst the weekly shopping can be delivered by one of the larger supermarkets.  The brand new Marina at nearby Scrub Island is due to open later this year and will offer more in the way of shopping and dining facilities. It is also likely to do more good than harm to property values on Great Camanoe!
