Top 10 Drinks You Must Try while in the Virgin Islands

As a young whippersnapper, I bartended at the BVI’s famous Myett’s Bar and Grille on renowned social hub Cane Garden Bay beach.

I was able to try all the cocktails at some point or another – not all at once of course as that would be asking for a visit to Peebles, but I came to know the cocktails and have my preferences like anyone else.

I decided to run a poll over the last two months on VIPY online to see which cocktail is considered best among our readers.

Some might be surprised by this list, and others may already know the answers, but I admit, I was a little disappointed by the positions of some of the great libations noted.

First, without looking at the results below, can you guess which drink was no. 1 in our poll?

The Bloody Mary

The Margarita

The Pina Colada

The Rum Punch

The Painkiller

The Baileys Banana Colada

The Dark and Stormy

The Daiquiri (All flavours)

The Bushwacker

The Mojito

and now… the RESULTS!

1) The Painkiller

I’m going to be truthful here and say, I’m not in agreement with this being the no. 1 cocktail.

Painkiller is the most popular drink in almost all polls and this has been no different. It is a creamy drink with consistency variant on recipe ingredient measurements – perhaps it’s the coconut, but it just never worked for me. I will admit BVI Soggy Dollar the VIPY RC’s Best Beach Bar winner do have the monopoly on this to the point where I will drink one when I’m on Jost Van Dyke.

The Painkiller Recipe

2 oz Rum (your rum preference)
1 oz Cream de Coconut (Coco Lopez)
4 oz Pineapple
1 oz Orange Juice

Blend – at bars you will often find this pre-blended because of its popularity.

2) The Bushwacker

Now this drink lives up to its name.

After sinking that chocolate goodness, give it 30mins and you will feel slightly…I suppose a polite way to say it would be ‘different’. I’m in agreement with this being near the top – definitely one of the best drinks ever created, but I’ve deliberately avoided them over the last few years due to that ’30 minute surprise.’

The Bushwacker Recipe for 2

4 oz cream of coconut
2 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur/Baileys (BVI version includes 6 different liquors hence ’30mins surprise’)
1 oz Bacardi® black rum
1 oz dark creme de cacao
4 oz milk

Combine ingredients with two cups of ice in a blender. Blend until smooth, and serve up in two 12 oz cups.

3. Margharita

3) The Margarita

A tequila infused drink, this is a known throughout the world. Whether frozen or traditional, you can’t go wrong with this cocktail. It’s basically designed to simulate taking a tequila shot slowly, and in a tasty way as well with the mixture of the salt, lime, and tequila at once. This in contrast to the salt lick, shot of tequila and bite into lime. Below is the ultimate recipe, but you can choose which brand and version of tequila. I wouldn’t recommend coffee patron tequila though…

The Margarita Recipe

2 oz Jose Cuervo® 1800 tequila
1/2 oz Jose Cuervo® white tequila
1 1/4 oz Rose’s® lime juice
1/2 oz Bols® triple sec
1 splash Bols® Orange Curacao liqueur

Pour ingredients into a shaker with crushed ice. Squeeze in the juice of two lime wedges, and shake well. Rim the outside of the glass with lime and salt, and add fresh crushed ice. Strain the shaken mixture into the glass, and add the juice from a further lime wedge. Serve.

4. Pina Colada

[one_half_last]

4) The Pina Colada

As popular with the North Americans as the Jimmy Buffet music that goes with it, this is another creamy concoction.

Like the Painkiller, I’ve never been a fan of this, but it was always a favourite with my bar patrons and will forever be, I’m sure.

The Pina Colada Recipe

1 1/2 oz light rum
2 oz Coco Lopez® cream of coconut
2 oz pineapple juice
1 cup crushed ice

Pour rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice into a blender with one cup of crushed ice. Blend until smooth, and pour into glass. Garnish with a slice of pineapple, a cherry, and serve.

5. Rum Punch

5) The Rum Punch

Tasty, sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, depending on how you serve it, and a constant preference in this region, rum punch does exactly what it says. A Caribbean classic that’s very simple to make.

The Rum Punch Recipe for a Party

1 cup Bacardi® 151 rum
1/2 cup Myer’s® dark rum
1/4 cup Malibu® coconut rum
2 1/2 cups pineapple juice
2 1/2 cups orange juice
3 tbsp grenadine syrup
Ice cubes

Mix all ingredients together in a blender or punch bowl. Pour over ice cubes in any type of glass.

6. dark and stormy

6) The Dark N Stormy

Every time I served this cocktail, I thought there was some great tale about pirates and a storm behind the creation of this potent drink with its.

I would like to say there is an interesting story supporting it, but it seems as though the name comes from the rum manufacturers the Gosling Brothers, producers of Black Seal Rum and Stormy Ginger Beer. You can see the connection as those are the two ingredients. A great drink. A not so exciting back story.

The Dark N Stormy Recipe

2 oz Gosling’s® Black Seal rum
8 oz ginger beer

Pour ginger ale over ice, add rum as a floater, and stir.

7. Baileys Banana Colada

[one_half_last]

7) The Baileys Banana Colada

A great drink that is pleasant and versatile, ranging in flavour from place to place. Both the Painkiller and Pina Colada seem to cast a shadow on it these days, but many crewed yacht charters do a supreme version that keeps it alive.

The Baileys Banana Colada Recipe

1-2 banana
2 oz Bailey’s® Irish cream
3 oz pina colada mix
1 oz white rum
ice
chocolate syrup (if you wish)

Blend first five ingredients in blender until smooth – smoothie consistency. If it’s too thin/runny, add more ice. Line glass with chocolate syrup and pour in BBC mixture.

8) The Daiquiri (All flavours)

[one_half]
Strawberry Daiquiri was the first cocktail I had on the Virgin Islands so I show favouritism toward it, but the fact that you can’t taste any alcohol at all, might be the reason for its lower position in this list. People like to taste their liquor Daiquiri and you just don’t cut it.

The Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri Recipe

2 oz Rum
1 oz fresh lime juice
Strawberry puree or real strawberries (amount varies)
lots of ice

Throw all ingredients into the blender. It should come out thick, if not, more ice! Serve.

9. The Mojito

9) The Mojito

I have a feeling that this is just much more European favoured as 9th place is a sad day for Mojito. Plus it can be hard to find the mint at bars around the Virgin Islands to make this correctly. Overall, a strange taste, some say ‘acquired.’

The Mojito Recipe

1.25 oz Captain Morgan® Original spiced rum/ or Whisky
12 mint leaves
1 tbsp sugar
0.5 oz lime juice
2 oz soda

Place mint leaves in bottom of glass. Add crushed ice, Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum, sugar, and lime juice, and muddle. Add soda water and garnish with mint leaves.

10. the bloody mary

10) The Bloody Mary

I assume that due to the fact that this is not a party favourite and seen more as breakfast, people have forgotten what a lifesaver it is in the morning. Perhaps it was unfair to even put this in the poll as it just doesn’t sit with these guys…it’s the first thing rowdy revellers call for in the morning, to nurse them back to health and yet it sits at 10th position. Tut tut.

The Ultimate Hangover Helper

1 oz Vodka
3 oz tomato juice
2 drops red hot sauce
2 drops green hot sauce
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch of horse radish
1 pinch salt
1 pinch peppers
1 stalk celery

Add Vodka, tomato juice, red hot sauce, green hot sauce, worchester sauce, pinch of horse radish, pinch of salt, pinch of pepper. Pour back and forth between two mixing glasses. Strain into an ice-filled highball glass. Garnish with celery stalk.
